In most cases, you can’t switch Part D drug plans mid-year — but there are exceptions.
Generally, you’re locked in to your plan for the calendar year once the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), also known as the Annual Election Period (AEP) (Oct 15 – Dec 7) ends.
However, you can switch if you:
Qualify for Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program
Move to a new area and lose access to your current plan
Enter or leave a skilled nursing facility
Are enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid
Experience another qualifying Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
What if your medication changes but you can’t switch?
Talk to your doctor and pharmacist. They may be able to find lower-cost alternatives or help you apply for manufacturer discounts or other assistance.
Bottom line: If your health or life situation changes, we may be able to help you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to switch drug plans. Let’s talk about your options.
