Should I Change Plans During the Annual Enrollment Period?

October 15 through December 7 might be more important than you think.
You want to be sure your Medicare plan still fits your needs — but reviewing it every year can feel like a hassle.
Maybe your plan worked just fine this year. Maybe you’re used to it. Maybe the thought of sorting through all the new options feels overwhelming. So when Annual Enrollment rolls around in the fall, it’s easy to think:“I’ll just let it renew and keep things simple.”
But that decision — to review or not to review — can make a big difference in what you pay and what’s covered in the year ahead.
Medicare Plans Change Every Year — and Your Needs Might Too
Here’s what most people don’t realize: even if you haven’t changed, your plan probably has.
Drug formularies shift. Premiums go up. Providers leave networks. Benefits are added or removed.
If you don’t take a few minutes to check what’s changing, you might end up paying more, losing coverage for a prescription, or finding out your doctor is no longer in-network.
And that’s frustrating — especially when you had a chance to fix it.
You Don’t Have to Switch Every Year — But You Should Review Every Year
The Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) is your once-a-year opportunity to:
Switch Medicare Advantage plans
Switch Part D prescription drug plans
Drop Medicare Advantage and go back to Original Medicare
Add a standalone Part D plan if you don’t already have one
You can make changes during this window with no penalties and no health questions.
If your current plan still works for you — great. But if there’s a better fit out there, it’s worth knowing.
