Does Medicare Cover the Cost of Hearing Aids?

Updated: Jan 23

Traditional Medicare does not cover routine hearing exams or hearing aids. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

  • Medicare Advantage Plans may cover hearing aids and related services, but the coverage and costs will vary depending on the specific plan. If you fall into this category, please contact us!

  • Hearing Loss as a Medical Condition: If your hearing loss is considered a medical condition, Medicare Part B may cover diagnostic exams, but not hearing aids themselves.

  • Cochlear Implants: In certain cases, Medicare may cover cochlear implants for severe or profound hearing loss.

Studies are showing that treating hearing loss may be helpful to prevent dementia in those at risk for cognitive decline. Hearing aids can slow the decline in memory and thinking skills.

Even so, Americans are often embarrassed to admit hearing loss — but think about it this way, how many of us need glasses or prescriptions?

All it took for my husband was realizing at Christmas, with our house full of the sweet voices of our grandkids, that he was missing out by not being able to differentiate conversations. A friend of ours noticed Mark‘s new hearing aids and asked about them. I joked that he got them so I wouldn’t have to yell at him anymore! That’s a second good reason —the people you love will love being able to communicate with you better.

Here’s to better hearing for all!
