Are Wellness Visits, Flu Shots, or Mental Health Services Covered by Medicare?

Let’s face it — healthcare isn’t just about treating illness anymore. It’s about staying well in the first place. So it’s fair to ask:
Does Medicare actually cover preventive care — like annual checkups, flu shots, or even counseling?
The short answer? Yes, it does.
And in many cases, that care is covered at no cost to you.
But there are a few things you’ll want to know to make sure you’re taking full advantage of what’s available — and avoiding surprise bills along the way.
Annual Wellness Visits: Covered
Once you’ve had Medicare Part B for at least 12 months, you’re eligible for a Yearly Wellness Visit. This isn’t the same as a full head-to-toe physical, but it is a valuable check-in focused on prevention.
Here’s what’s typically included:
A review of your health history
A conversation about your current medications
A check on things like blood pressure and cognitive function
A personalized prevention plan (screenings, vaccines, etc.)
The cost?
If your provider accepts Medicare assignment, the visit is covered 100%. No deductible. No copay.
Flu Shots (and Other Vaccines): Also Covered
Flu shots are covered once per flu season under Medicare Part B. You can get it at your doctor’s office, local clinic, or even some pharmacies.
And as of recent years, other important vaccines — like COVID-19, pneumonia, hepatitis B (for high-risk individuals), and shingles (under Part D) — are also covered, though some fall under different parts of Medicare.
If you're not sure what’s included with your plan, especially with Part D coverage for things like the shingles vaccine, we’re happy to help you check.
Mental Health Services: Covered, But Often Overlooked
Mental health is just as important as physical health — and thankfully, Medicare covers a range of services to support it.
What’s included:
Depression screenings (as part of your annual wellness visit)
Individual and group therapy
Family counseling related to mental illness treatment
Psychiatric evaluations and medication management
Partial hospitalization services (when medically necessary)
These services fall under Medicare Part B, so you’ll typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your deductible is met — unless you have additional coverage that helps with those costs.
More and more providers are also offering telehealth options for mental health visits, which can be especially helpful if travel is difficult or if you'd rather speak with someone from home.
Bottom Line
Medicare does cover a wide range of preventive and wellness services — including your annual check-in, flu shots, and even mental health support. But many people miss out because they either don’t know it’s available or assume it’s not covered.
